5 Home Remedies Every Mama Should Know
As a Mama, I wear many hats at home and specially the hat of doctor when my kids or hubby gets sick. Instead of running to the pharmacy to get medicines to cure every illness, I first try a more natural holistic approach. Fortunately, there are several things always in my house that can be used to alleviate and sometimes cure most of the common ailments. These home remedies are not only effective, but they are also very inexpensive and come with none of the side effects that you will get from traditional medicines. Below are 5 of the most popular natural home remedies i think every Mama should know. Lemons
Lemons are rich in Vitamin C which make them good for your health and well-being. Combine lemon juice with warm water, you will get an amazing remedy capable of curing a wide variety of illnesses such as nausea, heartburn, indigestion, stress and depression.
For my little one who always has cold like symptoms - coughing or runny nose during the winter. I use a mixture of lemon, honey and water, a teaspoon of this combination boost their immune system and helps the body to fight cold and flu. (Do not give honey to children under 1 year of age.)
Steam Bath
Enjoying a steam bath is not only a luxury that will help you relax but it also has several health benefits as well. Your heart works harder and faster when your body is submerged in hot water and this helps improve your blood circulation. It’s said people with heart conditions will find that regularly soaking in a warm steam bath help lower their blood pressure.
Warm steam baths are an excellent remedy for babies who have the common cold or is colicky. The steam relieves stuffiness and congestion and helps soothe them to sleep.
Garlic
Garlic is not very tasty when eaten alone but it is an incredibly effective remedy for many illnesses. Garlic has immune boosting allicin which is known to prevent and cure the common cold. Consuming garlic regularly will reduce your blood pressure, improves cholesterol and stabilize your vascular system.
I chop or crush 1-2 gloves of fresh garlic and “steep” them in hot water, use a strainer to separate the liquid then add honey. I take/give a teaspoon through the day this helps to alleviate cold and flu like symptoms. You may need a tad more honey then garlic, so that your little one can tolerate the taste. (Again, no honey to children under 1 year of age)
Baking Soda
Baking soda is a common item that’s a staple in my kitchen, I place an open box in my refrigerator to neutralize odors, but it does more than just help with odors. It's used as a remedy for a variety of other issues. Here are a few of the ways that you can use baking soda as a natural remedy:
-
Mix it with water and use it as a natural breath freshener.
-
Add a little bit of baking soda to your toothpaste to whiten your teeth.
-
Mix 3 parts of baking soda with 1 part of water and rub it on your skin to exfoliate.
-
Mix it with water to relieve mosquito bites
Salt Water
Salt water flushes have been used for centuries to detox and cleanse the body. People who do regular salt water flushes say that it helps to clean the intestines and colon, the stomach and also the digestive track. I regularly mix a quarter teaspoon salt with 1 cup warm water as a saline nasal spray. Using a syringe I spray a few drops into my kid's nostrils to clear up runny mucus cause by colds.
The best thing about these remedies are that they are completely natural and without any side effects.
